Sur del Lago is a renowned cacao-growing sub-region located in the southern area of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. This fertile region spans several states, including Zulia, Mérida, Táchira, and Trujillo, and is known for its long-standing cacao heritage and ideal growing conditions.
Our origin partner Chococao works closely with more than 800 smallholder farmers across the region. For over 25 years, farmers have followed Chococao’s guidance on harvesting and drying techniques, ensuring consistency, quality, and traceability throughout production.

Chococao is a family-owned company dedicated to restoring the global prestige of cacao produced in the south of Lake Maracaibo. Operating the largest Criollo cacao processing center in Venezuela, Chococao has been delivering premium-quality cacao to international markets for more than 20 years.
Through transparent sourcing and fair pricing practices, our goal is to connect ceremonial cacao lovers directly to origin while supporting sustainable livelihoods for local farming communities.
Post-Harvest Process
Drying is carried out using 69 wooden drying drawers and canopy systems, allowing slow, controlled sun-drying. The process begins with limited sun exposure and gradually increases until ideal moisture levels are achieved.
